August
8, 2000, has taken its place among the great days in Jewish history: On this day Joseph Lieberman, an Orthodox Jewish
senator from Connecticut, accepted Vice President Al Gore’s
invitation to serve as his running mate, thereby becoming the
first Jewish candidate for vice president in American history.
Though
a Democratic victory in the election is far from secure,
Jewish communities around the globe are leaving that for
tomorrow. Today, there are just good feelings all around, as
coverage of the Lieberman choice attests.
